Inside When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up is our Career Day book. A poll about what kids want to be helped inspire its prints, and one quiet boy finds his voice.

The story

It's Career Day, and one by one the kids share their dreams.

A classroom decorated for Career Day, with paper flags showing a rocket, a fire helmet and ballet shoes.
It's Career Day at school.
An astronaut floats among the planets while a ballerina spins on a starry stage.
Some dreams reach for the stars or dance across the stage.
A monster truck races through the mud while a firefighter holds a puppy.
Others race through the mud or rush in to help.
One boy sits quietly at his desk while his classmates share their dreams.
But one quiet boy stays in his seat.

We won't spoil what he says when his teacher kneels down to listen.

Behind the scenes

  1. The cover of When I Grow Up.

You helped. Last December we asked what kids want to be when they grow up. Your answers helped inspire the six prints.

  2. The Monster Truck Rally print.

Not a joke. On April Fools' Day we "announced" Monster Jammies. Monster Truck Rally arrived in August, and every racer in it is a Dreambly character.

  3. Our illustrator's first pencil sketch of the young artist in a beret.

The artist's first sketch. On Instagram we called her Lucy. Portal O' Treats fans, does she look familiar?

Fun facts to share at bedtime

  • Astronauts on the space station see a sunrise about every 90 minutes.

  • Rescue dogs can find people searchers might miss. Look for the pup in Fire Truck Rescue.

  • Ballet dancers spot when they spin: eyes on one spot, then a quick head turn to find it again, so they don't get too dizzy.

  • Monster trucks can soar more than 30 feet on a big jump, about as tall as a three-story building.

  • Kids learn by asking. Dream Academy is covered in encouragement: Be Kind. Be Brave. You can do it. Keep going.

The heart of the story

Some dreams are loud and some are quiet. The boy in this book needs a little time, and one grown-up who gets down to his level and listens.

Ask at bedtime Which job would you try first, and what would you do on day one?

The characters (and their classroom)

Each dream has a print of its own, and so does the classroom where they all get shared.

Read it together

It's a sturdy board book, with a read-aloud on YouTube and the eBook on Amazon Kindle.
